I just acquired a Delta mortiser at what truly was a fire sale. The mortiser was not directly involved in the 12/26 fire, but it was close by in the same space and so it suffered smoke damage. The motor seems to work fine and seems to drive the bits just fine. The body looks like it needs a bit of cleanup, what with the smoke damage and all. However the accessories like mortise bits and extensions, etc., all now have surface rust on them caused by the smoke and soot. If this was regular rust, I would be content to search for and follow the guidance typically reserved for restoring old hand planes and such. However, because this is smoke damage, which now involves more than just moisture in the oxidation process, I want to make sure I’m proceeding correctly.
Are there any special considerations I should know about before attempting to refurbish these parts? For that matter, should I do anything to the motor and the operating mechanisms in light of the smoke damage?
