Hey All,
This is my first post; lots of great info here so here it goes. I’ve recently discovered the joy of collecting wood and steel antique planes. I’ve bought a few on e-bay. Great buys. Is there any comprehensive book/athority on restoration of bench planes? I would like to at least use a few of the steel ones for small projects. Thanks-Pete

Try Amazon.com for Garrett Hack's "The Handplane Book."

If anyone knows of a source for blank steel for planes like these, I would like to use some of mine, too. I don't want to use the old steels since they may be original to some of them, circa late 1700's and early 1800's.

Hello,Pete!
Wooden or steel planes?
First.Don't use a motor machine for the job.
For clean wood You can work with steel wool ( very fine ) with lemon oil.
For steel ,work with a very fine sandpaper with kerozene as lubrificant.
After use a good wax.
