You ought to contact a conservator to fix a value on the piece in its present state before you do anything. I've used Skinner (Boston, MA) in the past and you may be familiar with them as several of their appraisers appear regularly on Antiques Roadshow on PBS.
The conventional wisdom is to take a minimalist approach, if you do anything at all.
