I just purchased a box of old hand tools at a garage sale. Most are in serious need of restoration and need to have rust removed. I seem to recall seeing an article that showed how to set up a bath using a battery to remove the rust, but I do not remember the details. Anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks,

Thanks for the response. I have printed out the article.

Look here: http://www.woodmangler.com/Derusting/electrolytic%20derusting.html
You might try digging around in threads from a couple of weeks ago in which this rust issue was hashed around. I believe it was "jackplane" who discussed using electrolysis to remove rust from plane irons.

I don't have a link for you, but I can say it works. Especially if the tool has rust over a large area. However, it doesn't necessarily make a nice smooth, shiny surface. It can still be black and pitted, so needs more attention. Also, the new coating of iron that gets put on it is quickly oxidized back to rust, so you have to put a protective coating on it right away. I used WD-40.
Make sure the sacrificial metal piece has a large surface area (not a rod) or it will take forever.
Thanks!
I'll echo stantheman's comments.
I found it especially useful for the smaller parts, like the frog or cam-lock._________________________________
