Is it possible (and electrically safe) to reverse the rotation of a Delta # 23-725 bench grinder (this the slow speed 8″ grinder)? I want to put a hard felt wheel on one side and want the wheel spinning away from the tool when I use the tool rest (as opposed to free hand manuerving of the tool edge).

Motors of that type can be sometimes be reversed, but the internal wiring has to be designed for it. Being that the motor was designed for a use that wouldn't ordinarily be reversed, the wiring probably isn't there.
A second problem is that there is a risk that the nuts holding the wheels on will unthread themselves if the motor's rotation were reversed.
What I have done in a similar situation is to put the grinder on a lazy susan type base so that it was easy to turn the machine 180 degrees so that I could work from the back of the machine when I wanted the wheels to spin in the reversed direction.

thanks for the response - I "forgot" the aspect of the retaining nuts would no longer act to retain the wheel. The lazy suzan approach to turn the entire machine sounds worth exploring. Again - thanks for the advice.
