I am trying to fabricate a gear shifter knob for a 1980 vintage Sabb, I have an old one to copy . I need to recover the insert that fits the metal post, it has two keys inside that I cannot reproduce the problem is getting the old one out of the knob?

Find a crap one on fleabay that you can chop up as a test case before you sacrifice the one you have. Put it on the shifter and mark it front/back, take photos or notes as you open it up.
