Looking to purchase a six inch jointers. Side by side, Ridgid, Jet and Delta seem to be pretty much alike. Ridgid is $150.00 less that the other two, seems like a no brainer.
Anybody got any experience with Ridgid, good or bad, that I should be aware of before committing to this machine. Thanks.

no experience but know that their tools are made in Germany, or so I have been told. FYI.

The undisciplined life is not worth examining.
Only some tools are made in Germany. For example, their jigsaw and their 6" random orbit sander are German, the latter of which I believe is virtually identical to the Metabo (possibly made by them). Most of their hand-held machines are made in China. The jointer in question is made in Taiwan.
Bought a ridged bench planner. tried and tried to get new blades for it. H.D. gave me the run around for 10 weeks. Finally gave up and was about to return the planner. My daughter came up with a 1-888 number from the east coast. Took 2 days and there were here. Found there was a local shop who handles them also. I hope that I never need a belt or an important part, because than Iam sc####d. You get the point. Am in the market for a jointer and guess which make I will not buy.

No experience with Ridgid woodworking tools (they make great plumbing tools, though), but I'm very happy with my Delta 6" joiner.
For the most part Ridgid woodworking tools are pretty well made (for the most part). The woodworking part of the company is completely separate from the plumbing tool section, and up until recently, was made by Emerson, as in the same Emerson that made Craftsman woodworking power tools when they were still 'good'. Not long ago, Ridgid decided to stop marketing the woodworking tools and sold the rights to OWT (One World Technologies, the same parent company that owns Ryobi). There's been a lot of wailing and gnashing of teeth since, but not much apparent change in the products, other than the color selection. Rumor has it that they intended for Ridgid to be their 'industrial/ heavy-duty' line and Ryobi to remain their 'hobby/homeowner' line, similar to how Dewalt/Black-n-Decker ended up. Time will tell.
FWIW, I've not used that particular jointer yet, but I don't think I've heard of anyone unsatisfied w/ it. If it's not a requirement for you to put your hands on it first, some other models that consistently have people praising hem are the Grizzly 1182, the Yorkcraft YC6J, and the Sunhill. All mail-order, and the shipping might be the killer. FWIW, the Sunhill has dang near the longest beds you can get on a 6" jointer, something like 52", and more than one review of the Yorkcraft and the mid-level Delta side by side seemed to indicate that they are near twins, and very probably roll off the same factory production line (only difference was the location of the power switch).

Monte
