Ridgid jointer and the big boys.
It seems that Ridgid is making a real effort to product a quality woodworking product for an affordable price. FWW Experts have said a lot of positive things about their products, but I want to get your opinions before I purchase a jointer.
I have made due without a jointer for a while now, but can’t put it off any longer. My first thought is to go with a “Bigger” name brand like Jet, or Delta (or even Grizzly), but the reviews are compelling. AND for $350.00 new it may be hard to pass up.
What are your thoughts????

I've had mine for 4 years. Blades were factory installed perfectly. Can't say it's had a lot of use but still original, never resharpened blades. Still straight and parallel.
Bob,
I own about 9 "major" woodworking tools and my drill press, 12" miter saw and 13" planer are Ridgid. I have not had any problem with them to date and I have owned them for about 5 years. I would not be hesitant buying a ridgid 6" jointer.
Jeff
Bob,
I have a Powermatic TA 66 &60, they’ve been in crates since 2004 due to a fire. Long story short is I purchased a Ridgid Table saw and jointer to finish working on my house and couldn’t be happier with both.
Here's a few pic'shttp://joes-stuff1960.blogspot.com/
Dear Joe,
That's a pretty nice setup.John
When it was time to buy my jointer, it came down to the Ridgid or the Grizzly G0452. I bought the Griz because for the same money, I got a jointer with a rack and pinion fence, a built in mobile base and was impressed with Grizzly's customer service. I own the Ridgid TS3650 and 13" planer, and am impressed with the quality and value. Basically, I felt I got more with the Griz. The Ridgid is a good machine and will serve you well. I think the price has dropped on it some too. Tom
Dear Bob,
I can't comment on the Ridgid jointer, but it is probably a good machine. If you want to get something heavy, I would go with Grizzly WAY before Delta. In my humble opinion. Delta no longer needs to be considered as there are so many companies offering a better product. Powermatic, Grizzly, Jet, Bridgewood and Yorkcraft are all offering superior products.
Best,
John
<<Powermatic, Grizzly, Jet, Bridgewood and Yorkcraft are all offering superior products.>>Perhaps, but can any of these machines take a 2" cut per pass?
Dear Mike,
I can only speak to personal experience. With proper technique and some slight modifications, such as the Yanmar upgrade, 2" is very doable on any of these.Best,John
Please explain what a 'Yanmar' upgrade is.Thanks,Jeff
Dear Jeff,
The post is a joke. "Yanmar" is a manufacturer of diesel engine. A few fellow knotheads took me to task last year about some of my techniques, so periodically it comes up. The reality is that two inches is not possible on the jointer. The most I have ever taken is 3/4", and that is a lot.Best,John
I have a Yanmar tractor, try as I might, I couldn't make head's nor tails out of what you were saying, but you had my interest, regardless. Also, I figured taking a 2" cut on a jointer, I just figured you had a death wish. Now it all makes sense....ya got me!
Regards,
Jeff
Dear Jeff,
Tractor! Why if that baby has a three point hitch with PTO, then you are in business!Best,John
It does....I am!!!
Jeff
Ah, the Yanmar upgrade. How did I miss that one? I stand corrected.
I think you need to define where you are: hobbyist, or more than that. IMO, Riggid stuff is hobbyist stuff. That's not a put-down: just a statement that that's where they fall in a category.
I think Ridgid is one of the "big boys"....Emerson's been at this for quite a while, even though they're now manufactured by Ryobi's parent.
The "jointer" portion of that machine is very similar to other good jointers from Grizzly, GI, Jet, Bridgewood, Sunhill, etc. The beds may be a tad shorter and lower, but you tend to have to pay significantly more for significantly longer beds. About the only beef I'd have with the Ridgid jointer is that the base is wider and will be harder to mate to a mobile base.
That said, my preference would be for the Jet 6" on sale for $399 or a Griz with built in mobile base, but the Ridgid should be plenty capable of doing the task at hand as well as any other full size respected brand name.
