What do you want to cut? The question is too vague as stated. The suggestions and discussion would go on forever.
Huh?
Start with a hatchet. If it doesn't work ask us again.
1. Quality of steel
2. Quality of manufacture
3. Quality of finish
4. Cost (you generally get what you pay for)
As I've been building my collection, I followed a rule that seems to work well for me -- buy tools for specific tasks as you need them (i.e. don't buy stuff because it's on sale or you saw a glowing review or you can see yourself maybe someday using it). The result for me is I don't have a pile of unused tools lying around, I saved some cash, and I don't feel like crap for buying stuff I don't need/use.
Some Guidelines I Use:
- Quality is expensive once... buy good tools and equipment; maintain them.
- Use the correct tool for the job... use a tool within its design parameters.
- Know Your processes... each of us has or develops preferred work habits.
- Develop a system of tools... Design, Layout, cutting, shaping, finishing.
- Understand/Define your limits... don't buy tools for things you'll never build.
