Difference in 1500 and 1550 is large. The 1550 has a wider base and tabs for securing to floor. It has a worklight built in and a lid that opens to the rear instead of the side. It has a square table that is a WW's dream for clamping. The operating lever is ambidextrious. Has a tool tray and quick tension belt system.
Lifetime warranty on workmanship, even though that as all warranties can open a can of worms. Get it with a 10% off as I did and even a better $ deal.
How does it function? Smooth as a babies butt and the parts are machined well. I did extensive shopping and the 1550 is where I ended up. It has a smaller HP motor, but that is not critical in a DP. I haven't bogged on anything yet. It also has a 15" throat. I deemed that is the most I will probaly use.
In essence it is a well made, user friendly machine that I won't part with. Or did you figure that out already. ha..ha..

Disregard pic of my old 10" BT DP. I forgot I still had that on file. Dah... I won't get rid of it either, as I use it for metal drilling. ha..ha..

SARGE : I noticed on some other WW Forums today that Emerson Electric/Ridgid announced that they are not going to make Ridgid power tools themselfs but rather contract out the Ridgid name to other mfgs, hmmm God only knows who is going to be making Ridgid power tools now?? ryobi? or are they seeking a China or Taiwan mfg/ I think some of there stuff is contracted out now..wonder if theres going to be a big rush to the Home Depot stores to get Ridgid before they change mfgs or are people going to wait & see if HD clears outRidgid stuff cheaper? Maybe some of the Ridgid gang might want to Join us in the Delta Club :) ...IM taking memberships lol

When the 1550 came out my local HD had it in stock and didn't even know it. I had to explain to them the difference between the 1500 and 1550. They still have a few 1500's in stock at the same price as the 1550. ??
They had a 1500 on floor display the other day and tagged 1550. I went to the tool dept mgr. and suggested he change that. He did, as that is false advetising. There is a big difference in the two models.
Bottom line is they don't price modify much at all. I'm not aware of the situation with Emerson-Ridgid, etc. You might keep your eyes open and if that Ridgid planer comes down to clearance, get it. I bought the Delta two speed as with free shipping and no sales tax, it was cheaper for me. I don't regret it either.
Have a good evening...

sarge , thanx for the info on your drill rig, was checking out grizzly , they have a 20in press with 1.5 hp mo big 18x16 table. was in sears tda looks like their press, diff color . cant find the 1550 in my area they told me this model does not exist///// ya believe that? ckeck it out see what ya think. dont own any grizz tool but maybe now i will. mt.

Ha... the 1550 does exist as it sits in my shop. HD since the re-vamping hasn't quite been the same. Used to have long time knowledgeable employees. Most are part time now, without a clue. A lot of the old long timers left for other jobs.
I was in a HD about 3 months ago that had just opened. The manager was manning the tool dept., as he was short handed. I had to tell him about his tools and helped assist several customers. He offered me a job. ha..ha..
The Griz is probaly a good deal. I haven't seen it personally, but several comments have OK'ed it. Just check it out. Grab the spindle and chuck. See if it has excessive play. If so, avoid. If it seems sound, continue on and see if it has the features your're looking for. It's a "big boy".
Good Luck...

Doc,
Emerson is a US company, but I don't think any Ridgid tools are made in the US. Also, somewhere on the web is a long list of electrical motors with maufacturing specs, and already emerson makes very few motors themselves. They are all outsourced.
Don
Don; Your probaly right as I recall didnt they already close there Tenn power tool plant? & are now making all there power tools in China..its to the point anymore where you cant keep track of whos making what for who & wheres it made.lol...
ToolDoc
Doc,
Sad but true. I came across the motor thing while looking to upgrade the belt motor on my drum sander. 95%(just a guess) of emerson's motors where listed as being made for them by companys in China and Tawain(been awhile, but Mexico seems to stick out also). Que Sera.
