Rigid: Now lifetime warranty on battery
Just stumbled across this offer from Rigid while drooling at the new Hitachi SCMS.
I normally lurk here, but haven’t seen this thread posted (sorry if it’s a duplicate). Rigid tools is offering lifetime warranty on their cordless tool batteries (in addition to most other items it seems).
Caveat? You MUST register your tool online at rigid’s website. Also, there appears to be grandfather period for tools purchased prior to April 15th, if you register by Sept 30.

Ridgid Offers Lifetime ServiceManufacturer sets high standards with service coverage After unveiling a three-year service warranty and three-year guarantee on manufacturer defects last year, Ridgid Power Tools has upped the warranty ante again with the introduction of a limited lifetime service agreement for its power tools and pneumatic tools. The agreement provides free parts and service on normal wear items—such as batteries, brushes, and O-rings—for the original tool purchaser for the life of the tool. According to Ridgid, the service agreement enhances the company’s commitment to the lasting durability and quality of its lines. “We want our customers to be as confident as we are in our products,” says Jeff Dils, president of the power tools division of TTI North America, manufacturer of Ridgid power tools. Unlike a traditional warranty, the service agreement has a required registration process: Tool owners register tools online, or via phone or mail, and receive a lifetime service agreement and a membership number, which they can use to register additional tools later. When a registered tool needs service, the owner can simply take it to a Ridgid service center. The service option is available for tools purchased after April 15, 2005. However, Ridgid is offering a window of time for users to register tools purchased prior to April 15; the deadline to register those tools is Sept. 30, 2005. For more information, contact Ridgid at 866-539-1710 or visit: www.ridgid.com.

It's to be stressed that it is a "Lifetime SERVICE Agreement", not a Lifetime Warrany. The tool must be registered to be eligible.
Quite true Howie, I wasn't clear about that in my post.
I think that what that entails is the fact that you, as the user, are responsible for getting the tool to the service center for their evaluation and appropriate action.
In addition, there are no terms that state what the replacement / repair quality will be.
But, the new policy does state that batteries will be covered and replaced. Rigid must be feeling some fierce pressure from the competition and needed a "leg-up" gimmick.
cheers,

Pretty OK gimmick when you consider how expensive batteries are. Takes some of the sting out of the initial purchase price.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)Another proud member of the "I Rocked With ToolDoc Club" .... :>)
Great gimmick ...
If I'm choosing between Rigid and brand x battery drill, it's gonna be tough for brand x to compete - no matter which brand IN the case of drills the prices are pretty competitive, the drills are all pretty much the same - the big difference is batteries and yes they are expensive (even for 15 year old drills!)M.
Measure it with a micrometer, mark it with chalk, cut it with an ax.

Ain't capitalism great ...........!!!
It's hard to imagine there isn't some sort of "catch" when it comes to batteries -- but apparently there isn't, at least right now.
Ridgid will be moving a lot of cordless tools in the coming months.
