RIPPING VENEERS FROM WARPED BOARD ON BAND SAW
I am making a credenza from highly-figured curly maple. Two interior, very visable walls, are to be made using veneers glued to plywood, I am hoping to rip the veneers from a highly figured, but warped board, that I cannot use for anything else.
The board measures: 42″ x 6-1/2″ x 7/8″. The vertical walls are 20″ high and 17″ deep. Any ideas for ripping the warped board?
Thanks for any help,
Tenderfoot Bob

Ripping Veneers
Bob, the board is 42" so I would start by crosscutting it at 21". With 17" deep panels you need three useable slices from each piece and it is warped so I would consider then ripping each bit down the middle, each cut having the effect of reducing the effect of the warping and so now enabling the cutting of three reasonable veneers from each quarter board.
If the slices are now sanded, matched and reassembled on a substrate you should have the basis for those walls, but take care to allow for some movement.
I hope this makes sense, I use highly tensioned metalworking bandsaw blades and no bottom guide on my saw and get good results.
Mufti.
