I have been told that Robland used to have a sliding table mechanism that, with the addition of a router, could be used as a horizontal mortiser. I have done an extensive search of the Web with no luck. Any ideas, experience or alternatives? TIA

I don't know about the one you mention, but here is what I have. Cost wise it was not bad. Somebody recently posted plans for a home made setup that looked good. Do an advanced search on the subject, and you will find them.

If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it.
And if it stops moving, subsidize it.
It's basically the mortiser off a combo machine. I know it pretty well. I set one up for a friend. It comes with a mortise chuck which can be used with a jackshaft and standard motor which would be my preferred way to set it up as ooposed to the router. The Grizzly G0540 is a much sheaper option. I've been a slot mortiser advocate for over 20 years and know pretty much all the ways to go from the FWW #141 to the commercial rigs like Paolini, Griggio. The Laguna/Robland will run you around $1,000 to complete. I think their stand design is lousy. They used to list it on their site but obviously the would rather have you buy a more expensive option.
There's also the beadlock and the new Festool Domino which is coming soon and will be under $1000.
