Rockwell model 46-011 lathe questions
Hello, i just purchased a used older Rockwell lathe, everything works fine, but i was hoping replace the dead center on the tailstock for a live center. it does not have a typical tapered tailstock spindle though. the spindle is threaded and the handwheel is threaded to move it back and forth. the end of the spindle has a section that is threaded 3/8″-20. a small cup center that is threaded to match attaches to the spindle. does anyone know if a live center can be purchased to go on this arrangment? all the spindles that i find in stores are morse taper type, i have not seen any like mine. is that obscure of a design? Also do you have any tips for removing a spur center? that thing is bound on so tight i can’t get it off to save my life. Sorry, for all the questions this is my first lathe, thanks, Dan.

Sorry I'am nor familiar with you tail stock problem. But if you head stock has a hollow spindle, as mine does, you can knock out the spur drive with a long piece of drill rod or dowel rod.

Dan,
The threaded section in the tailstock is probably on the end of a Morse tapered shank unless Rockwell did some weird engineering, which they might have. It was threaded so you could change the type and size of the center without having several complete Morse tapered centers which would have added to the cost of the tool, and Rockwell was always trying to save a buck.
If you turn the tailstock crank to draw in the tailstock quill all of the way it will push out the Morse tapered part if it hasn't seized tightly in the taper, in which case some penetrating oil and light tapping with a brass hammer will probably loosen it up. If it still won't come loose remove the threaded shaft attached to the handwheel and insert a steel rod in the bore and tap the Morse tapered shaft out. Use the same technique to remove the center from the headstock.
In all of this be gentle, if you hammer really hard you could damage something or you could be trying to take something apart that wasn't meant to be disassembled until a set screw or pin that you haven't seen is removed. If in doubt, find someone locally who has some experience with machinery.

I'am afraid that the spur drive is going to be attached just like the dead center on the tail stock by the looks of the hex on it. Looks like your problem is "hexed " in more ways than one, sorry.

I'm afraid that's about the least expensive lathe Delta (Rockwell International, actually) ever made. It's also the only one I'm aware of that they made that doesn't use a Morse taper. Here's a parts list.

I don't have a suggestion for replacing the tail center, unfortunately.
Be seeing you...
