I recently purchased a nicely maintained Rojek horizontal slot mortiser from a wood shop going out of business. Is there anyone out there that has experience with this machine? I am interested in your experiences, good or bad. Thanks, Glenn

I've used that machine as well as industrial horizontal mortisers. The Rojek will work fine but you have to baby it a bit compared to the heavy duty ones. Loose tenons are the way to go. Very fast and accurate.

Well i am looking a hoz. mortiser myself. the only one i see are the ones on the combo machine. All i want is the mortiser and a jointer, but dont want to to spend all the money for stuff i dont need. $3000 is a lot for that combo machine. Any suggestions!
Many of the combo machine mortisers can also be purchased as a separate unit with their own motor.

The slot mortiser is one on my favorite topics. Great tool and hardly known by most woodworkers. Cheapest is the Grizzly G0540...a little over $330 delivered. Next would be the mortiser off a combo machine. Laguna sells the Robland mortiser table for around $600 and it comes with the chuck so it vcould be set up with a regular motor and jackshaft or a router. You need to build a stand to mount the mortiser table on as well but that's no big deal. FWW #141 had the slickest home built slot mortiser. Funy thing is I first learned about slot mortisers years ago in FWW but they never did a prpoer follow up on the topic. I've used just about every type and brand of mortiser out there from chisel, chain, Maka as well as many commercial slot mortisers like Griggio and even made them from converted handmills. Once you see one in action there is no way you would go back to a chisel mortiser unless doing specific reproduction work. Loose tenons are so much faster.
