I fixed up an old rocker, and for the finishing I used oil and then
wax. The seat had to be replaced, so I wove a seat out of 1/4 inch
rope. The rope is just natural fibre. I want to put varnish (or something)
on the rope to sort of preserve it and give it a bit of color. Any
suggestions on what to use? Tahnks

I think shellac is the finish of choice for rush seats so maybe for your rope also.
*Patt,I would recommend a marine grade spar varnish, thinned down to about 50/50. Even full strength, spar varnish will remain flexible. In your case, because this is a seat, you will want even more flexibility. Shellac will not offer any flexibility. FWIW.Dano
