Hi all
I’m Looking for recommendations on a rotary phase converter for my small shop (at present I have ruled out static converter). I will have at least 4 machines with 3-phase motors so I think replacing the motors is not financially attractive.
Max load I anticipate at any one time = 6 hp (2-3 hp cyclone + one machine up to 3 hp). There are quite a few offerings out there — from Phase-a-Matic & Cedarburg, to mom-and-pop shops that make ’em from used electric motors, to kits. Lots of stuff on eBay.
Can I get something decent for less than $500?

Go to http://www.woodweb.com and post a WTB ad in the machinery exchange. I found a 15hp for $350 that needed $40 in new bearings and it was 12 miles away. You may be surprised at what shows up. The converter was the best move I made. Used three phase equipment is much cheaper than single phase.

Woody, with $75 worth of capacitors from McMaster-Carr and a 3-phase motor I had sitting around I built a 5hp phase converter that works as well as the best rotary phase converter you can buy.
