What type of wood is good for molding? The molding will be painted and I don’t need much of it, so the primary consideration is ease of shaping. Is there a species of wood that is especially good for fine detail and minimal tearout?

Try Soft Maple or hard for that matter .
Thank you for the suggestions. I forgot to mention that I will be scraping the molding after the initial routing, but that probably won't make any difference.
