I’m new to this forum, but a long-time subscriber to Fine Woodworking, and after reading the wisdom in many replies I’m confident that someone out there will supply my answer. I am in desperate need of a window sash bit (or a pair of them) nearly identical to the Amana 55340. I say “nearly” because instead of the usual 1/4 in profile depth, I need 3/8 in depth. I have used the Amana 55340 for literally thousands of feet of sash, but for this rather large historic preservation the architect insists on 3/8 in profile depth. Like the Amana bit, it must be able to make 1 3/4 in sash. I’m pleading folks, on bended knee – – – if I knew How to offer a politically correct bribe I would. I’ve tried removing the bearing on the Amana bit, but the cope cut doesn’t match up satisfactorily – at all. Maybe all of the 3/8 in profile sash I’ve seen was manufactured in a factory by commercial shapers, but surely that router bit exists somewhere. I will really appreciate any feedback to direct my search.
Thank you, Dick Fox

Custom made router bit profiles
Dick,
The last time I checked there were plenty of Co's that will make you a custom router bit profile. althought I couldn't tell you the name of one just off hand. But if you search on the internet I'm certain you will find one. You may want to call Amana , Freud , CMT or another major router bit Co and ask them. If they don't then they could probably refer you to some one. another place you could look on line would be the Woodshop News site. They have a directory to just about everyone in the industry that would offer this type service. This may set you back a few dollars, but if this is a big job, as you say, then it can be absorbed into the cost of the job.
Good Hunting!

Stop goofing around with router bits and get a shaper.
