I am using a porter cable handheld with a 1 1/4″ straight cut bit. The bit is properly seated. I am jointing cherry for glue up, so my cuts vary in depth from 0 to 3/16″ as I true up the 4/4 boards. When taking light or no depth cuts the router is chattering. On heavier cuts it chatters… But about 40% less. The chatter is intermittent happening 4-5 times on a 12′ pass. Any Ideas as to why or tips on how to clear it up? I thought it might be the diameter of the bit, so I put a 3/4 straight in… Same problem… No change.

Check your grain
The only time I have experienced chatter was when I failed to check and was routing against the grain or taking too deep a cut (lateral, not longitudinal deep). You may have cherry with wandering grain direction in those places where you get chatter.
I also use a Porter Cable router so I don't think the router is to blame.

Chatter
Turns out I was using a metal straight edge as a guide and the chattering was happening everywhere I had a clamp it was feedback from the vibration of the router. Using a wood plate on the router solve the problem.
