I recently purchased a collet reducer (1/2 to 5/16”). I’m not confident that it grips the bit securely as I had to wrench on it pretty hard before the bit would not fall out.
Has anyone else experienced this ? Is it normal to have to tighten these things beyond the torque needed to secure a 1/2” bit ?

I had that problem once and purchased a different brand, that worked fine.
I bought my adapter from Lee Valley Tools. What brand did you buy ?
It was many years ago, so I don't know. Sorry.
8mm router bits ? https://www.leevalley.com/en-ca/shop/tools/power-tool-accessories/router-accessories/30126-bushing-adapters?item=16J9718&utm_source=free_google_shopping&utm_medium=organic&utm_campaign=shopping_feed&utm_campaign=CAN-EN%7CPLA%7CShopping%7CTools%7CNon-displayItems&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAiA8sauBhB3EiwAruTRJgEd75lps0kC4rfYZ7UuYOvV2agbxj0Hx63FdCJCVsLekK1VfazsVhoCQmUQAvD_BwE
To clarify….. I have a Leigh jig which included an 8mm adapter. It works fine for the 8mm bits, but seems “iffy” for the 5/16. I purchased a 5/16 adapter and it also requires a lot of torque on the wrench to secure the 5/16 bit. I purchased the 5/16 adapter from Lee Valley Tools, so I can return it no problem. Does anyone know of a brand that would fit better ?
I don't like reducers. That thing is spinning like crazy, and it should scare you a little. If your router is compatible, get a whole new collet with the right size bushing. They are readily available for my Bosch router in any size I want. I use the 5/16 often.
Thanks John
I have 2 Porter Cables and 2 Makitas. I’ll see what they have available.
It may be a simple thing that you have already tried, but my reducer works best if the compression slots in the main collet and in the reducer are lined up before tightening. If they are offset, the reducer may be restricted from compressing fully. John c2's advice seems good, something I had not ever thought of. I've never had a bit spin off, but a slightly loose bit can migrate out a bit and certainly spoil a workpiece.
Thanks for your input. I’ll give that a try
