Has anyone tried the fixed/plunge router combos out there? Especially the PC? Sounds like it might be a good upgrade for me over my yr-old Craftsman fixed based (and I found one for about $180-you can too). Thanks, Todd

Todd,
Based on a negative review that the 2 hp Porter Cable wobbled on its posts, I tried it and confirmed that. The 3 hp is solid.
I got a 2 hp Bosch dual base and am very happy with it. ($119 at Lowes - but that's another story. Some Lowes have them at $119, some at 219.)

I got the PC when they first started offering them with the dual base. Still runs, I still like it. I'm not a huge fan of the plunge base due to the locking mechanism. It could just be mine, but it doesn't lock under the tension of the spring alone, you have to force it the rest of the way by hand, and that's often excessively awkward when you're trying to hang on to a running router. I also have the Speedmatic. Agree that it's solid. I don't think you can get it as a dual base kit. If I recall correctly, the fixed base motor is like the 1 1/2hp where the cord goes in the top of the motor and the base is separate, on the plunge the cord goes through the handles. Haven't looked at the plunge there close enough to determine if they're interchangeable, but don't think they are.
I checked out the Amazon.com ratings of the PC vs the Bosch, and I may just wait to spend the additional $40-60 on the Bosch. Sounds like the PC is difficult to change over, and the bit change is a pain. Todd

I have the old PC combo b-4 the upgrade to different locking mechanism. I also got the Bosch. Haven't used the newer PC, but based on the above comparisons I would rather have the Bosch combo.
Want to buy a used old-style 1 1/2 HP PC combo cheap? ha..ha..
Good luck..

Tempting offer, but ... thanks for the input.

Check out the new Dewalt 2 1/4 hp kit.
I recently got the Bosch fixed/plunge duo. I had to do a little work to the fixed base to get it flat. No big deal--just removed the sub-base and lapped the base with a sharpening stone. The plunge base had machining marks on it and was already flat. Very nice tool. But then the PC is also nice. Used one for years. The new 1-3/4 HP variable speed duo looks real nice. You probably can't go wrong either way. Nick
Lowes is currently selling the Bosch combo for 219 with a free edge guide for christmas. Wood workers warehouse is currently selling the pc combo for 199 with free edge guide and d handle base. Just got my for warehouse cataglog and it came with a 10% off coupon for the first order over 75. That would make the pc combo 180 also.
