I’m building the workbench prodject from Season 2 in the getting started in woodworking series. I just bought the 9″ Groz vice. I dug out my crappy 15yr old Black & Decker router, and realized it doesn’t have any kind of edge guide, and will only take a 1/4″ bit shaft. I was debating whether to buy the Milescraft Turnlock circle and edge guide for $40, and a new Bosch Router for $220, or a router table for $350 and make due with this router for now, untill I can afford something nice like a dedicated shaper.

Buy the new router and build a router table!

Keep the cheep B&D though. If you tape it to a can of house paint it makes a great paint shaker ! Nothing vibrates like a B&D
: )
Shaper spindles tilt and are much quieter. Much stouter spindle. Reverse direction. All nice to have. If you are considering a shaper I'd get that.
router $200
plate/raiser $200 to 300
cabinet and top $ 100 +
fence $150 +
total minimum ~ $700
Plus your time putting all this together rather than doing wood working $200 $300 ?
nice shaper $599 to a thousand ( as you probably know )

Give me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe. Abraham Lincoln ( 54° shaves )

I'm a big fan of the PC 690 routers - You can get them in combo's with a fixed and plunge base for about $200. Lot's of times they'll even come with the edge guide as a bonus.
Then, with a bunch of scrap, you can make a nice simple router table, and be on your way to making your bench.
Hope this helps!
