I have a router mounted in the side table of my Powermatic 66 and need to replace it as it is worn out. Does anyone have a recomendation for a router that functions upside down well. Also does anyone have one of those new raising mechanisms that work above the table? If so are you pleased with it? Thanks, Bob R.

Almost any router will operate happily upside down.
I use a Woodpeckers unilift and love it.
I have a big Makita hung under my lift - soft start, variable speed, tons of grunt.

I just recently completed a router table for my shop and purchased a Porter Cable
3 1/4 hp variable speed, soft start model # 7518. So far I love it. It is a Hoss!!!!!
I do not have adjustment above the table but I have not found it too much of a burden to reach through the door and loosen the knob and raise the router.
This one has a BenchDog lift; not the panacea it's meant to be, but handy to be sure.
More on the router table here. A lot of 3 HP motors will work upside down.
I put a Milwaukee 5625 in mine recently. Handles come off, soft start, variable speed and tru-top adjusting (don't need a separate lift). 3 1/2 HP. Drops out for bit change.

Pat,
Is this a change in philosophy for you, using a lift, or just a little research to see if you should (change). BTW, have you spent any time with the new Festool routers? I know a few folks who would like to read your opinions.
Greg
Investigated the lift out of necessity; made the one at the picture link for a client. I don't want nor use the thing.
I would like to look at the Festools; did a study on the old small 1/4" tool. My guess is the big plunger is serious business.
Should somebody lend me one, I'll post that data at the routers link.
As Kiwi said.. Just a thought.. Every time I finish up on my router table is make SURE I vacuum out the motor vents and not sure it helps but can't hurt!
