Unless you are going to be using template guides its not super critical.
If you are using guides then it is VERY important especially if you are using it in a dovetail or similar jig.
But it is better to be able to use the sides of your plate as a reliable reference when making jigs and not have to be super careful about always using the same side against whatever jig you are using.
