I’m sure this has to be the fifty billionth time this has been asked here but I’m asking again cause I’m tired of trying to sift through the archives…I tried posting this in my own stomping grounds (Breaktime) to no avail so here I am in your yard now.
I just got the newer Freud 3 1/4 HP plunge riter new off of Ebay for about $150ish bucks and now I need a table for it and I don’t have the time to make one with all the work I still have to do on my circa: 1680 house/mess…
I’d like it all…lol…for under $400. Anyone have any tried and true router table suggestions for me?
I’ve had the Williams and Hussey Shaper molder for years but I don’t want to keep shelling out dough for new cutter blades every five minutes and want something I can buy in a pinch if possible hence my new router.
I do have a 1 1/2 hp router for lighter work.
Right now I want to use the router/table to make crossrails for cedar fencing I’m making…and I’m making ALOT!!! I’ll have about 1500 LF of cedar rail to edge on both edge lengths…as well as fifty gazillion posts..
any suggestions goes appreciated…
Thanks mucho
andy…

Here's the thread to look at. Two of us are expounding on the virtues of the Veritas table from Lee Valley. Lataxe has way more miles on his than I do on mine. I have the big Freud plunge also. A huge advantage to the table is that any darned router clamps to it, no need to make custom plate.
No need to spend money on the stand. Simple to build, or make a glorious cabinet with drawers and such.

Thanks,,yeh, I was looking at the Veritas which by the way I got from you from some obscure website you wrote in.
I'm wondering also if Dino's EZ Smart system would be a good decision. He's coming to TipiFest 06 here at my house this year in August and will demo a bunch of his stuff so if youre in the hood (cold spring harbor, LI, NY) lemmie know if you wanna sign up for the fun filled three days with all us Breaktimers and their families...and some of the Taunton crew.
Be well

Wanted to just thank everyone here and show you this one I found,,,Seems like a real beauty from the wedsite anyway...the second and third tables are the ones I'm kinda diggin'. Mainly the one for $345 I think it was?
And almost all the other tables in other sites are all about $400? The one in the website I linked here in the second picture seems like a steal for well under $400 check these out http://www.mlcswoodworking.com/shopsite_sc/store/html/smarthtml/pages/routabl2.html
Lemmie know whatcha think everyone.
Thanks again

You're talkin' about the 120# cast iron table, right? No way! Truly, you must be kidding, right? Simply can't see going there, sorry. I totally don't buy "Tilt-up Access: Allows easy access to router for adjustments" It's the back that tilts up. I'm having a hard time seeing that as "easy access." Also, you're stuck with their stand, no? I'm not thinking of an easy way to mount it to a cabinet or to a saw wing. the hold-downs hold down but not in and they don't look adjustable.
I've only seen one report from a Grizzly table user, and he was far less than happy. I played around with it at the Bellingham showroom a bit and was pretty glad I'd never ordered it. Just too awkward.
I'd better quit now, beginning to feel grumpy.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
I totally don't buy "Tilt-up Access: Allows easy access to router for adjustments" ME EITHER! I crawl under most of mine to make adjustments!
I built my table, and use the woodpecker lift. They also sell table packages. Here is a link to one for you to take a look at. They have lots of options. I have not got a bad piece of equipment from them yet. They also have a E-mail list you can get on and they have regular sales. Good luck on the decision.

Thanks bones...I'll check it out. Not sure I want to keep buying more and more accessories cause it adds up fast but it's definatly in my head . I keep checking Ebay for lifts...

I have a 'FEW' router tables..
In a pinch, a nice flat hunk of 3/4 ply and a hunk of 2X4 (flat and at 45 degres) and two 'C' clamps will do. Oh I forgot.. You have to mount the router to the table with a hole a 'bit' bigger than the bit you are using.. Also, some legs help.
Lots of useful information here:

I just purchased the grizzly router table. While I just put it together today I like it so far. Fence is O.K. Im sure I'll make a replacement soon. But I doubt it will bow over time like my homemade one. Hope this helps.

Andy, I already went down that MDF table top road and I am near Babylon, I am sure the humidity is no less on the North shore even if you are a few more feet above sea level. You can read my set up in the other thread. The steel top dosen't even know that there is a 3 1/2 hp Milwaukee hanging there. I have seen that steel table in person in their store in Pa. IT'S A LOOSER!!! in my opinion.
If you don't need the base floor unit just get the top, fence, sled/arm and the router top stand. You can use it on a bench, a piece of ply on horses, clamp it in a workmate or build a simple ply box stand. It's a bullit proof table set up and that's the straight poop, good luck. Pat
paddy
Humid? Well my doors won't close since summer started...lol.
Which other thread btw?
So you're saying you DO like the MLCS steel table TOP?
As you probably saw some people DON'T like it...Far as holding the piece tight to the fence I have no problem rigging up support using magnets or whatever to help me do that and the other objection Forestgirl had was that she didn't like the tilt up table from the back but it seems to me that it couldn't hurt and can only be helpful...Its there if you need it. The top to me looked pretty rock steady and the fact that the router clamps to it seemed like a plus.
I donno...still up in the air about it but I DO hear you about making my own cab...I'd "rather" do that anyway to customize it for my own needs.
Which thread again are you talking about?
Thanks

Andy,it's titled compact router table and it's current now. On the heavy iron table , it is stable but it's orient junk, I saw it, touched it and it's bad. Please don't make that mistake. The alum slider table is no better, just another cute variation of junk. Could you use them , yes .will you be happy at that expense ? NO
You should consider this investment in a table to be one that will not only let you hog out the work for the fence but one that will let you replace that router after it cooks out and do the fine work that you WILL have to do on "that old house" in a precise manner. I have been down this road before and I am delighted with the Veritas set up. Others in our crowd have more time on it than I but feel the same. The folks that responded to your question are by no means beginers, you should value their suggestions. Be sure to read the compact router table thread. Best of luck.Pat
The biggest problem I have with aluminum tables is the (*(&^*(&% black marks they leave on the wood. If you did not need to sand before the machining you certainly will after and not on the machined portion. I have two Porter Cable router tables with milled aluminum tops. Flat? Yes to a gnats a$$. Stable? No problem. Good a fence as most? Yes. Too expensive? Darn tootin. But it's those ^&*(*$ marks it leaves on the wood that really pop my cork.
