I have a Bosch router in its fixed base (RA1161) attached to a Bosch router table (RA1181). I am attempting to use the Lee Valley box-slotting bit (16J8302), but it doesn’t reach above the router table when inserted correctly into the collet (the router is adjusted as high in the table as it will go).
I just assumed that since the router bit is specifically for use with a router table (and since I bought the table and router from the same company), everything would work together and the bit would be long enough to stick above the table. Is there something wrong with my router table setup? The base seems to hold the router really far away from the table. Is there a special adapter/base I’m missing? I only see one Bosch router base that is specifically for the table, but it looks like it will hold the router just as far away from the table.
I’m new to woodworking and this is my first time using a router/router table. I don’t have any other bits to test out yet (or at least not bits that I intend to use in a table), so I don’t know if this going to be a problem with every bit. However, the bit shank is 1.5 inches long which seems to be normal, so I feel like something is wrong with my router table setup. I’ve read about the router lifts, but thought they were more for convenience. Do I need one in order to actually use the router table? If so, is there one fits my router table? Do I need an entirely different router and router table? If so, can anyone please suggest something?
I am hoping there is an obvious and inexpensive fix to this issue that I am just overlooking because I have no clue what I am doing. However, I have no intention of using one of those extension things you stick in the collet. I’d rather just spend the extra money to set the entire thing up correctly.
I did a lot research (obviously not enough) before I chose a router/router table and this issue never came up as something I should consider, so I’m pretty frustrated. Thank you in advance for any advice.

Do you have any photos?
The router plate should be attached directly to the bottom of the table, therefore your collett and bits should function just as they would if there were not a router table. Take your router off the table and get to know it a bit better. Figure out the adjustment mechanisms and see how far the bit will raise beyond the base plate.
attach some pictures of the router and how you have it mounted to the table. It'll be easier to figure this out, but I'm sure it's just probably something not set up right.
Thank you! That was an easy fix. It turns out that it is just very difficult to put the router in upside down (at least for me). I took it back off to take pictures and it went in correctly. I took it back out and tried putting it in and struggled...I guess I just need more practice, but at least I know that if the collet isn’t very close to the table top, I haven’t put it in correctly.
Thank you again!
Glad to hear that it worked out for you!
