Does any one know of a plunge router that has 4.5″ inch plunge. Next a set of bits that have at least 4.5 long cutters.

I am not familiar with one so deep, but, if you are trying to cut a hole in the middle of a piece, you could use a pattern bit on one side and switch to a trimming bit on the other. This cuts the plunge depth required. Maybe this comment is mute if your application is different.
I picked up a 6 inch, 1/2 inch end mill for some odd applications I had about a year ago. It's just a straight cutter though, and I've never seen anything profiled that is that large.

PC make a tool for cutting out for door locks that has a deep reach but also has a big price!
I suspect that stabilizing a bit rotating at 23000 rpm thats that far from the collet creates some issues, even if you're taking light cuts on multiple passes. Imagine hitting a hard spot and getting some chatter when you're 4 inches deep into something. Might explain the lack of availability. Perhaps making your cut with the router to the extent of your available bits and old fashioned chisel + sweat equity from there?
This is far beyond the capability of any router or router bit. Try chain drilling to the depth you need and cleaning up with a chisel. Nick
Pretty much on the fringes but can be done with 2 plungers.
Let No.1 plunger dig, say 2", not a problem for most. Then use no.2 with same fixturing starting at 2" to finish depth. Would do it for a short run only. Second router must not be a toy. Would use Bosch 1619, PC 7539 or DW625 for the dirty work.

What am I missing here? To plunge to 4.5 inches you obviously need at least that much bit sticking out the bottom. Add at least an inch for the collet to grab abd you're up to 5.5 inches. Are there really router bits that long? Nick
Well, no I have not ever seen a router bit that was 4.5" long, but I do use Porter Cable 513 door mortiser that will reach up to 5". There are some constraints though. You can only get the cutters down to 5/8" and up to 1 1/4" in 16th" increments. The mortiser runs at 23000 rpm with a 1.5 hp motor. I have often thought that for larger parts that this would be great for mortising. I have only used it for lock mortises though. I rarely build anything that would require mortises that large, even the doors we make. Joe
Wow - I'm glad to see some other replies expressing concern over that *long* of a bit hangin' out of a router screaming at full steam. I think I'd look at a more low tech solution like multiple drilled holes and chisel cleanup as suggested.
What kind of 'hole' are you making that requires such an operation?
