Greetings. I need to rout an ogee edge onto some curly maple stock for a picture frame and wondered if there were any tricks to doing it smoothly (e.g., feed rate, router speed). My experience with curly maple so far is that it is hard for me to do anything to it that gets a relatively smooth surface. I understand the trick with planing and jointing is to wet the surface slightly, but wondered if that would cause unforeseen problems with the more detailed ogee profile. Thanks for any input.

Hey Stan- You're going to want to climb cut when you rout just about anything on curly maple. Meaning on the outside edge, you would go clockwise. The thing is the router is going to want to get away from you real fast. Take multiple passes, and then on your last pass just barely take some material and go counter-clockwise kinda fast to avoid burns. It works for me-Good luck..John E. Nanasy...
