How are RTA fasteners different from coarse thread drywall screws for joining cabinet panels together with butt joints. Are they a stronger fastener? I am considering using this method rather than rabbit and dados. Anyone out there that has used this method?

I don't know specifically which type of fastener you have in mind, but most of them were designed more for easy assembly by a purchaser rather than for any great amount of strength. Most of them are also designed for use with particle board which has little strength when joined with ordinary screws.
If you are assembling the furniture yourself, and using solid wood or plywood, it is unlikely that the RTA fasteners would offer any advantage.

There are screws that are better than either for shop use. ASSY makes special screws for PB construction. Like John said RTA hardware is not designed for shop use.
Pardon my spelling,
Mike
Make sure that your next project is beyond your skill and requires tools you don't have. You won't regret it.
