Hi guys Im trying to do a rub thru finish on a piece for the first time. I stripped the varnish off the piece and wiped it down with thinner and scuff sanded it. Do I need to use a primer before the first coat of paint? Im doing a red undercoat with a black topcoat. Im using H20 acrylic “Old Village” colors. What is the best process. Thanks Kevin P.S. Im using a finish for the top of the piece Im using a 50/50 varnish mineral spirits It seems to be taking forever to dry would a touch of japan drier be O.K. thanks

I don't know about the paint part, but the 50/50 finish should dry very quickly. It should be dry to the touch in a couple of hours. If not, I'd suspect something is wrong (old, etc.) with the varnish. Drier might help, but I think it would be a lot safer to just get ne varnish.
Best of luck.

*DECAL REMOVALAnyone have a method of removing small manufacturer decals from finished wood items so they can be reused?
*You don't need to use a primer, but you'll have to use an additional coat or two of the red to build up a decent base with even holdout. Smooth rubthrough patterns will be more difficult to obtain with water-based paints because they won't sand as smoothly or feather-edge as nicely as alkyd paints. If your varnish is Spar varnish, it could take a long, long time to dry, especially if you're applying it thickly. If you're using an interior product, wiped, or brushed thinly, I'm with Rod.
