Hello
Have been looking at some old stanley 45 planes. The bead and combination plane. Like the different profiles and diversity of this tool. Also wonder why Lee Valley never made profiled cutters for their plow plane (I have and adore it)? Anyhow the stanley I believe has a nickel finish to it. Most, not all, I have seen have some degree of rust to them. Will the products available today, evaporust or naval jelly, remove the rust and the finish as well or just the rust? Don’t mind a little rust however would like safe option to restore them if possible. I’m looking for a user, not a collectible. From what I have seen rust free 45’s can come with a pretty hefty price tag? Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated?
Thanks

I've no experience with naval jelly, but evaporust has never taken the finish off anything I've ever used it on...the only place I could foresee a problem is if the rust extends under the plating...

Hey MikD, evaporust works great. I've restored many old planes with it. I like to let the parts soak overnight. Good luck!!
