quick one,
I’m new to picking up antique/ used tools and need a good rust remover, nothing super serious here, just something to get off the surface rust and get down in the nooks and crannies. I have a wire wheel on the bench grinder if stuff is stubborn. I caught someone mentioning “vapo-rust” in another thread tonight. Any other magical remedies or brands.
Thanks HeavyD

Electrolysis. Battery charger and Arm & Hammer super washing soda.
Google on it and you'll find several articles on it. Better than the wire brush.

Heavy,
Home remedy for rust removal: 1 pint molasses dissolved in 1 gal water. put in covered container, immerse rusty object. Check periodically, (daily, weekly for badly rusted items). When object is de-rusted, remove and wash in clean water. Dry, and prime or treat immediately, as bare metal will start to rust again.

It is called Evapo-Rust and I got it at Autozone in the body/paint repair department. It works great and is very safe to use.
Life is what happens to you when you're making other plans .
Naval Jelly. Follow the directions
Evapo-rust is what you're remembering. I've used it on several very rusty things and it works great. It doesn't discolor like Naval Jelly, and it's non-toxic, so if you splash it on yourself, no big deal. It helps to brush with a wire brush if you want to decrease the amount of time it takes, just knock off the loose stuff. It won't hurt any plastic that's part of the "tool" -- such as a clamp. Works great with threaded things or others with "nooks and crannies". Definitely doesn't take a week!
It's available at AutoZone now, I hear. Or, if you have alot of stuff to do, you can find an on-line retailer to buy a gallon or 5 from. You can use it over and over until it just stops working.
