I’m working on a table using a solid board of black walnut as the tabletop (oblong – roughly 12″ x 36″, irregular shaped, bark around the edges). Haven’t figured out what type of undercarriage to use.
Any suggestions?

Trestle undercarriage is the first thing that comes to mind when I hear the word "rustic".
a cool way also is drilled through legs...the holes from above are in line centered the LONG way and angle out to splay the SIDE way..A compound splay if you will..I use a "T" auger, eyeball it. No jigs or any craziness..sighting is all it takes. Wedge in the tops of the turned leg tennons with the wedge of contrasting wood going perp. to the slab. Hammer in the legs invert on something level , use a 4' level to level cut the legs to length, flip over and final scribe to the floor..Pic follows..cant add to this post
