I have just noticed that a few of my relatively small collection of router bits have have developed some rust on the 1/2″ shanks! This is really frustrating and embarrassing.
Are these bits history or should I try to salvage them? (with emery cloth and WD-40?)
Are all router bits prone to rust easily?
(These are/were Freud bits.)
Fortunately none of my other tools have developed any noticable rust probably because I am pretty careful about keeping a light coat of caranuba wax on everything. Must have happened largely last summmer since I noticed some condensation in my basement shop when the outside temp was really hot and the humidity was high but the shop was always cooler.

Typically i lightly polish the shanks of all my router bits before and after each use with some 0000 steel wool, its always worked well for me.

Brill, clean with wire wheel and keep bits in closed containers. (Pill vials come to mind) NO W D! silica gel packet enclosed. Better check your collet and collet nut and brush any rust there too. WD is partly silicone and promotes slippage. Stein.
Those little charcoal cannisters that come with prescription medicine are good absorbants too. (Dessicant)
