I am planning to make a set of wooden building blocks for a baby and want to know what kind of finishes are safe. I’ve seen block sets in stores that are bright primary colors – are these painted or stained? It seemed that stain would be better, since it cannot chip off like paint can. I would prefer some more interesting colors than just the three or four primary colors that are most common. Are there any such stains that are “baby safe”? And then would I put a clear coat of some sort on top of that? Or if I decide to just leave them uncolored natural wood, what kind of clear finish would be appropriate?

There are companies that make baby safe paints and stains. I've seen them advertised over the years. Sorry I don't know of any specifically.
They can probably be mixed to get other colors.
That's what I thought, but on searching the web, I haven't been able to find any. Can anyone else help?
Here's a start.
