I’m sure this post would go better with pictures but I haven’t developed that skill set yet. Heck I can’t even figure out how to put these #@%*&*!!! hinges on a toybox for my granddaughter: I made a toy box of 3/4 clear pine with hand molded cherry trim. I used a piano hinge to hold the lid on and had to mount the hinge to the 3/4 inch molding on the back side. When I tried putting the safety hinge on the lid would not close. I then realized that the lid was too far back and soI put a 3/4 ” strip of wood on the underside of the lid and attached one end of the safety hinge to the strip…the dam- thing still won’t close.
The type of hinge I’m using is listed at Woodcraft as a self balancing hinge. Anyone have any helpful suggestions? This thing is driving me nuts!
Thanks,
Neil

I've used the same hinge on box lids also .
The hinge mounts under and behind the actual top and to the back of the box .
Not sure what type of hinge you are using -- there are many styles of safety hinges -- but the ones I've used have all been very picky about where they are mounted. There is an exact distance from the edges, and from the pivot point, where the arms must be secured. The ones I have used have all had directions that list these dimensions. If yours doesn't, and if Woodcraft can't give 'em to ya, I'd make a mock-up and experiment until you find the sweet spots.

Everything fits, until you put glue on it.
