I’m looking for details on how to make the joints Sam Maloof uses to make his chairs. Especially the joint to join the front leg to the seat. I’m in the planning stages of Sam inspired dining chairs for my daughter and her boyfriend. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks, Roger

Roger, I sympathize with you. I'm trying to figure out how to make the joints on a Maloof table. I wouldn't even venture a chair. Shalom
They're covered, albeit a little quickly and superficially, in his video: Sam Maloof Woodworking Profile (Taunton), and in his book, Sam Maloof Woodworker (Kodansha International ISBN 0-8700-910-9).

Thanks:I recall reading the book a few years ago. I couldn't remember where I had seen his joint technique. He's given seminars at the Worcester Center for Crafts a few times. The one I went to was more philosophy than woodworking.... Truly a wonderful experience. If I get lost I may need to seek the help of their teachers....

I just completed a Maloof inspired rocker. Bought the plans from hal taylor (haltaylor.com). No way I could have done this without these detailed plans and instructions. They are not cheap but are very detailed and should help you with the joints for both the front and back legs. PMM
PMM:Thanks! I'll check it out. Hard to "copy" a genius without some help!Roger
The joint on the rocker is deceptivley simple. It is described in fine wood working #25 pg 54. I took a course with him and he had changed the rabbit to 3/8 inch. The rear stile is angled and he uses a special rabbit bit with a three degree angle. You are in for a lot of shaping sanding etc. Good luck. Malcolm G
Thanks....
I'll check it out.

RogerL,
I've been resisting sharing this with you because it may not help...but it may. Over the July Fourth weekend http://www.thewoodworkingchannel.com had the full Maloof series back to back. It ran twice: once from 7am to about 11am then from 1pm to about 5pm. I believe he makes a rocker during the series.
You may want to try and contact them to see if they are planning on running the series again.
BG:Thanks I'll check it out....

Maloof briefly describes it in his video "Sam Maloof -Woodworking Profile" ISBN 0-942391-26-8, coincidentally from Taunton Books and Video. He mentions that he has special router bits made just for doing this joint.
Mark Adams also describes how to make this joint - in a great deal of detail - in hisvideo "Joinery - Technical Ways to Join Wood" . Requires a 1 1/4" diameter, 3/8" rabbeting bit and a 5/8" round over bit after cutting a 3/4" deep by 1 1/2" notch on the edge of the 1 3/4" thick chair seat stock.
Fortunately for you, I'm going to save you some time (all one line so watch the line wrap)

Hope this explains ONE way to make this joint.
