How about the sand that they use for sand art bottles?
Hello
I use non colored sand (natural) that I bought in a pet supply store.
It works for me and was easy to get and affordable. I have done this process with 1/8 inch woods that I usually do Marquetry with down to very thin veneers. I’m also very paranoid when using a hot plate or wood burner pen in my shop each time I do, just in case I get preoccupied I hang a piece of blue painters tape on the doorknob so on my way out I’m reminded. Have fun! I’m hooked Claudia
I’ve had success with craft sand. Just get the plain not tinted. Some folks suggest that a finer sand is better and it might be. But I see quite delicate shading done with craft sand. It is finer and cleaner than the sand you find for construction work or play pen’s. Hobby Lobby or Michael’s here in the US have what you need.
In his book, Craig Thibodeau recommends terrarium sand. I picked some up this weekend at a pet store, but didn't realize it was a "mix" and had coconut husks mixed in. I decided to try it anyways out of curiosity. The husks didn't hold heat the way the sand did so it worked just fine.
Thanks everyone I bought the sand and know on to sand shading.
