What grit should one sand with after planing or scraping? Does it depend on the wood? Or is it necessary at all if you are going to use a film finish?

If your plane is well set up and the wood not overly figured, you can generally start sanding with 150 or even 180 grit sandpaper. As you suggest wood is part of the equation. Some woods plane better than others.

Dear Mr. Conover -- Thanks very much. This matches my experience. I've read that after some planing one can go "right to finish" but I've not found that to be so.
