Am applying multiple layers of 50/50 poly/min. turps to a table
Should I lightly sand with 400 grit b/n each coat?

If you recoat within 10-12 hours, you do not need to sand between coats for adhesion. As soon as the prior coat is totally tack free, you can apply the next coat.
My schedule with a 50/50 wipe-on is to apply the first two coats and then let them dry for 48 hours. At that time I sand with 320 paper on a sanding block to flatten and smooth the surface. Then I will apply 3-4 more coats without sanding.
