hi,
found this cool piece of furniture on the street. it is circular sidetable. veneer over chipboard throughout.
the top piece has a lot of water damage and the rest just needs to be sanded and re-polyed.
1. rather than replacing the top with a new veneer, i was thinking of putting a mirror in. snazz it up a little.
i’ve attached a photo. do you guys think this will work.
2. the wood below where the mirror will go is chipboard. i plan to remove the damaged veneer first and then sand the chipboard down before gluing on the mirror. can I sand chipboard? I’ve never done that before.
best,
g

Particle board doesn't sand well, but if you're just going to put a mirror over it anyway, it will probably sand well enough. Absolutely, positively wear a dust mask--the glues in particle board can be very irritating to your respiratory tract.
It's possible that attempting to sand it will cause it to crumble away. If that happens, it means that it got too wet and there isn't really anything you can do to save it.

thanks for your help!
My advice is to put it back where you found it.
