Though finishing is not my first love, I’ve learned to get a good looking finish on table tops by working up though the numbers (to 4,000) with Abralon pads. They are great.
But, the contoured edges, ovolo etc., are a different story. How do I get that phony, high gloss finish off them without losing the crispp shadow lines?

you really should knock some of the sharpness befor starting the finishing. Now use steel-wool.
Jerry ,
As Keith has said , you should sand the detail out by hand as best you can without changing the profile before finishing . I use a scotchbrite type of sanding pad for the detailed parts between coats of finish , it gets in all the areas but won't change the shape at all .You might use a really worn piece of sand paper first depending on the detail.
give it a try dusty

Thanks. I'll try the steel wool. The top has a nice sheen to it but the edges show the gloss from "untouched" gloss finish. I don't like that look.Jerry
Just what I have use sometimes so 'try before ya' buy'
Some oil, wads of cotton balls, and Rottenstone... I think if you use water it leaves the gloss? I could be wrong on that.. I have been wrong MANY times..
