Hey Guys,
I just bought a Bosch variable speed angle grinder and hope to try it out this weekend if not sooner. I’m working with Baltic Birch plywood boards laminated together for a table top.
I’ve seen the Holy Galahad by King Arther’s Tools. I like the idea of being able to see through the disk as it’s spinning.
But these disks are pretty pricey. Does anyone out there have experiance with these carbide sanding disks? Would I be just as well off with a regular, mush less expensive sanding disk.
This is my first time to use this type of tool and trying to shape/sculpt something with it. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance!
Ray

Fiber resin discs are an option
I've got a friend who's does power wood carving and he uses fiber discs to start sanding, then progresses to lots of hand sanding.

They consist of a replaceable sanding disc and a backer, which is usually about the same size as the abrasive disc. For greater flexibility, you can reduce the size of the backer by running it against an abrasive. The discs are fairly rigid.
I haven't tried the holey ones yet but have been using the Arbortech and Karbide Kutzall ones for many years. They work great and last many times longer than sandpaper and the are stiffer allowing different control than sandpaper. There's a lot more types to choose from these days and they aren't terribly different drom each other. Will get some of the holey ones soon but I haven't had any problems with the non holey ones over the last 20 or so years of suning the old standard ones. The Karbide Kutzall ones have several profiles to choose from. You don't really need a variable speed grinder either. Full speed works fine.

Often something that appears expensive is cheaper the the so called cheaper option. Just go for it and don't get paralyzed by over analyzing everything. They do remove skin very quickly.
Whatever works...try the sandpaper ones as well.
