I am making a red oak box. Presumably it is desirable to remove the sanding dust from the pores. How is this done?

I just vacuum it off with the shop vac and brush attachment. Some people blow it off with compressed air.
Blowing it out with compressed air works well as long as you are not in the same room where you will be finishing the box. If you are, a vaccum or a rag wetted with mineral spirits works good. Don't use comercially made tack cloths. They can leave a residue on the wood that may interfere with the finishing process.

...or...you can make it work for you by wetsanding with Watco (or look-alike) for a finish. ;-)

Not a post, just an aside in another thread. Strained it something fierce, but it's good enough now, I can type with 2 hands for short bursts. Took the "paw" thing off my sig since there aren't as many typos and abbrev. as there were.[Typing w/ 1 paw sucks; plz 4give typos]forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
Whew! Glad it wasn't a kickback or worse!
