I am having a hard time getting a smooth surface on some Lacewood. This is the first time that I have worked with this beautiful wood, but, it seems to be difficult. I have tried sanding with a variety of grits and speeds with RSO sanders and it seems to tearout or pit before I can ever get a smooth surface . Any suggestions or thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

I have used only a small amount of lacewood, and only in the form of veneer. It is a very difficult veneer to work with, but I do not recall having any trouble sanding it. I sand with a block of wood with a cork face; my guess is that the more aggressive RO sander is the problem. Maybe a standard orbital sander will work, but I think hand sanding is the way to go. Lacewood is fairly soft, so sanding by hand wont be too time consuming.
