Need a sanding sealer for a softwood door I need to stain. So used to working with hardwoods I forgot. I knew better. managed to sand down what little I did.
Anyone brand or mix stand out? I think I have some shellac sitting around, assuming it is not dried up. I know people use it thinned.
Open to suggestions from anyone with experience.

The shellac should work fine. If it's dried-up, just add alcohol to re-dissolve.
TEST your shellac on a sample board. Old shellac will not fully cure, and you'll be screwed.
It should be dewaxed shellac anyway, or you could have adhesion problems with whatever you put on top. Zinsser Sealcoat is a very good dewaxed shellac. It's short money to avoid big problems.
I second using shellac. Zinsser is convenient but I've also made up my own. If you're going to finish the whole thing with multiple coats of shellac, start with a heavier cut (maybe 3 lb?) and then go to 2 lb for subsequent coats. The advantage is uniform color with all coats.
