Okay, I have taken the advise of the community and cleaned up the old planes in the house. Bought a few and generally having a good time. One that I have identified is a Sargent low angle block plane with a knuckle joint. I have to admit to reaching for it often, even before i started the journey. It has 8C stamped to on the side of the body. Any information on it would be most helpful. What kind of date would it have?

That's the date, anywhere from 607 to 617, BC of course. Did you want something serious?

Want and expections are two different things. I was hoping for something serious, but will take what I can get. I have been using it a great deal and just wondered about when it was made -- not sure if it was my grandfather or great grandfathers and date would help figure out which one.Dan Carroll
Looks like someone would chime in with some facts. The history of some of those old planes can be interesting. I have a couple of my grandfather's planes that my uncle didn't get. They date back to the nineteenth century but I don't think they are anything special. I'm really not much into planes yet. Guess I hadn't really realized till lately what all you could do with them.
I was lucky -- no uncles except for a great uncle that never had children so everything came back my direction anyway.Dan Carroll
Not so lucky here. All I got was those two planes and my name. I exaggerate, of course.
