I used three sources as follows to reproduce traditional sash for a timber frame building:
1. Woodwork Joints by Charles H. Hayward
2. Make Your Own Handcrafted Doors and Windows by John Birchard
3. The Practical Woodworker by Bernard E. Jones
Note that I was doing reproduction of 18th C style windows with through tenons and muntins. The muntins tenoned into the styles, and had complex joints where the muntins crossed. I've attached a picture.

nice job on the windows. What did you use for wood?Troy
I used reclaimed old-growth redwood that I acquired from a small sawmill in Arcata, CA. I used this lumber source for the timber frame building for which the windows were built (picture attached).

Thanks for the feedback.
The book:Make Your Own Handcrafted Doors and Windows by John Birchard is out of print unfortunately.
After searching every public library in London (via a data base) I came across a catalogue by Reddiseals Direct http://www.reddiseals.com which has a very good diagram illustrating the sash window.
(Credit to Park Royal Timbers and Jerry at the JOinery shop next door in Gorst Rd)
Couldn't find the diagram on the Reddiseals Direct site. Can you post the full link, please? Many Thanks,
David Jackson
They dont appear to have the Sash window diagram on their website.
You may have to order the catalogue or request they scan and email it to you.
Thanks for the reply...just re-read your earlier message...I had mis-read it to say that the diagram was on their website
KillenWOOD,
Nice shed. Can you tell me where you got the pintle hinges. Im trying to locate/purchase 6 strap hinges without going broke!
Thanks for any help!

I bought them at Ball & Ball in Exton, PA. They were more than what I wanted to spend, but I wanted quality.
Tim
Thanks for the reply. I have resigned myself to the price and now have to order them.
Thanks

The current issue of Fine Homebuilding has a article on building a wooded sash. I am assuiming this is for a house window. The article was tilted toward a wooden sash for a shed or outbuilding.

Mouldy,
FWW #64 has an article on making coped sash for furniture. Except for the dimensions of the stock, the procedure is the same. Written by a fellow named David Ray Pine. He's probably some kind of crackpot, but may be worth taking a look at. Also a write up in the same issue on the crosslapped mitered sash joint. By Gene Landon, I believe.
Regards,
Ray Pine
Mouldy,
Some of the router bit sets for window sash (including the Freud 99-050 and 99-051) have instructions with them.
Freud America, Inc.
Sash windows are a good alternative to Vinyl or PVC. They provide a more natural or traditional look to windows and better suit older properties.
