I came across some sassafras,a friend of mine had the tree cut down in his yard, it was dead for a few years. How is for turning and how would you finish it. It smells good. When I was a Boy Scout we use to pull the saplings out clean the root off and chew on it and sometimes make tea. Thanks

It turns very well and smells good to boot.
Just a quick note. I love the smell of this wood also but be carefull. Even sawing dovetails by hand really bothers my lungs, much more so than any domestic wood that I have used including Walnut.
Thanks for your info, and we use to chew on the root when we were in scouts. How does it finish.I just read a few months ago how bad Walnut is, my one dog goes right for the walnut cutoffs as soon as she comes into the shop.I used a lot of Walnut when I first started in wood working,(early 70's) I made many a Walnut slab tables, they were the rage then,I still have a couple slabs left. Thanks Rick
Doesn't seem to hear from many turners!
